In both cases, there is a high quality that can’t be beat.
Vinyl records has an incredible sound quality that CDs and digital files lack. There’s an old school appeal that gives people a nostalgic feel, especially past generations. Tactile experience is key in the sales of vinyl records. It’s an experience like no other. I read in an article recently that humans desire physical interaction, which is part of human nature. Anything in digital format can simplify our daily lives at times, especially having easy access to music, books, etc. However, the tactile experience will always be around because the sense of touch is important.
You may wonder why I’m talking about vinyl. The parallel I draw from viny is that an oil on canvas also has warmth and authenticity that print or machine-painted art lacks. An oil painting is something that will last for generations to come. A painting can immortalize a memory which gives it a personal feel. An original oil on canvas has a uniqueness that photographs are missing. When an artwork is based on a favourite picture, there’s a feeling of nostalgia. The feeling of holding the painting can’t be described. It’s similar to the tactile experience that is enjoyed by many.
Opinions vary about owning the digital format or the physical copy of something (i.e. a hand-painted oil on canvas or a musical album). One thing is certain: authenticity represents what is real and from the heart.
