When it comes to old photographs, it’s important to handle them with care. Taking a picture out from the frame can be difficult, especially when it has been framed for a long time. Take your time in removing it.

There are different ways to take a picture out from its frame. The first option is laying it down on a table for stability to avoid dropping it. More importantly, be careful with the edges of glass, so as not to hurt yourself. A colleague of mine hurt herself when she took out her old photo from the frame. Put the picture face down and open it up. Some frames have hooks and tape on them which can fall off, when the photo has been framed for a long time. Handle the hooks delicately because you can also hurt yourself or damage the picture, if you’re not careful. Depending on how difficult it is to remove the photograph, there are a variety of methods which can be used. If you use heat or water, make sure to have a backup of the picture. Another option is to freeze it. In case you are nervous doing so, you can stand to the side of the photo and take a picture, so the flash will not hit the middle of it, especially with a digital camera. This is a technique I learned in a photography course.

The damage can be caused by a variety of factors such as fingerprints or it fading with time. There are simple solutions to conserving your photographs. However, if you can’t salvage the image, that’s when you call a specialist.
